Opposition Accuses Rulers of Lavish Spending Amid Economic Hardship
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has launched a scathing attack on the Punjab government following viral reports that it has acquired a luxury Gulfstream business jet worth an estimated $38-42 million (approximately Rs11 billion) for the exclusive use of the chief minister.
PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram condemned the alleged purchase, labeling it a “glaring hypocrisy” as the government publicly advocates for austerity while the nation grapples with record unemployment, crippling inflation, and a struggling economy.
A Question of Priorities
In a statement, Waqas questioned the justification for such extravagant expenditure. He highlighted that nearly half of Pakistan’s population lives below the poverty line, lacking purchasing power for basic necessities, and that the country survives on foreign loans.
“How can a government justify splurging on a high-end VIP jet when 45% of Pakistanis live below the poverty line?” he asked. The PTI spokesperson warned that this “reckless spending” exposes a profound disconnect from public hardships and a blatant disregard for citizens’ suffering.
Waqas asserted that the public will not tolerate the squandering of national funds on personal luxury and vowed to hold those responsible fully accountable for the alleged misuse of the treasury.
Demand for Transparency on Imran Khan’s Health
In a separate but related development, the PTI information secretary expressed deep concern over growing public anxiety regarding the health of party founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. He demanded immediate and unrestricted access for Khan’s personal physicians to conduct all necessary medical examinations.
Waqas stated that the matter is a test of “national trust, human rights, and governmental responsibility.” He criticized the government’s silence, saying it has intensified public unease.
“Imran Khan is a former prime minister of Pakistan and the voice of millions… any uncertainty regarding his health and safety is intolerable,” he said. The PTI demanded that Khan be allowed to be taken to a hospital or diagnostic center of his choice for any required scans or specialized evaluations, warning that no further delay would be acceptable.
The twin statements from the opposition party underscore mounting political tensions, framing the luxury jet report and the health of its leader as symbols of governmental accountability and priorities during a period of national economic strain.
