The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced the formation of a new political force dedicated to securing the release of its founder, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023.
A Peaceful “Street Movement”
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, a key loyalist, revealed the plan outside the Supreme Court. He stated he has been tasked by the incarcerated leader to lead a “street movement” aimed at a peaceful struggle for Khan’s freedom. Afridi announced the creation of the “Imran Khan Release Force,” which will be formally registered as an organization.
“The force would be formally registered and would pursue a peaceful struggle,” Afridi said, adding that members would take an oath in Peshawar immediately after Eid ul Fitr.
Structure and Objectives
The force is planned to have a clear chain of command, with Imran Khan himself deciding on leadership roles. Afridi stressed that thorough preparations would be completed before any campaign is launched.
According to the KP Chief Minister, the movement’s broader goals are the supremacy of the Constitution, democracy, and an independent media.
Health Concerns and Political Tensions
The announcement follows heightened concerns over Imran Khan’s health. A recent medical report submitted to the Supreme Court indicated the 73-year-old former cricketer has only 15% vision remaining in his right eye. The PTI has cited this as a reason to expedite efforts for his release.
The government, however, maintains that Khan is receiving the best possible medical care. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi recently stated that PTI leadership and Khan’s personal doctors were satisfied with the treatment, accusing his sister, Aleema Khan, of politicizing the issue.
Afridi countered these claims, alleging that court orders were being ignored and that the PTI founder is still being denied access to his personal physicians.
Background of Incarceration
Imran Khan was removed from office via a parliamentary vote in 2022. He was arrested in August 2023 and has since been convicted in multiple cases, which he and his party assert are politically motivated.
The formation of the “Imran Khan Release Force” signals a new phase in the PTI’s strategy to mobilize public support and intensify pressure for the release of its central figure.
