LAHORE — Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to strictly enforce a province-wide ban on camera-equipped glasses and other spying devices, as concerns mount over unlawful surveillance and the misuse of recording technology.
The provincial government had decided earlier to prohibit spying equipment, including glasses, pens, watches and other everyday items fitted with concealed cameras or recording devices.
Strict Legal Action Warned
A spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department said strict legal action would be taken against the use, purchase and sale of such equipment.
The spokesperson said the measure aimed to safeguard citizens’ privacy and personal information, with particular emphasis on protecting women and children.
Authorities have received complaints involving illegal surveillance, harassment and blackmail carried out through hidden recording devices, the spokesperson added.
Fundamental Rights Pledged
The department reiterated that the provincial government was committed to protecting citizens’ fundamental rights and ensuring the security of their personal information. Those found illegally using ordinary items fitted with hidden cameras would face strict penalties, the spokesperson said.
The decision comes amid growing international concern over smart glasses being used to secretly record women and girls.
Smart glasses allow users to take photographs, record videos, listen to music, make calls, translate text and interact with artificial intelligence assistants.
Global Privacy Alarm
Concerns intensified in Europe, particularly in Britain, where media reports highlighted the alleged misuse of smart glasses for secretly recording people. Reports that Meta was developing a facial-recognition feature for the devices also raised privacy concerns.
