Authorities in southern France are bracing for a fresh bout of severe weather, with forecasters warning that torrential rain and violent thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding across the Gard and Hérault departments on Monday.
Météo-France announced that both departments will be placed under orange alert for rain, flooding and storms from 2:00 p.m. local time, adding that an upgrade to red alert — the highest level — cannot be ruled out.
Storms Building Over the Mediterranean
According to the national forecaster, rain is expected through the morning, followed by “stronger storms” sweeping in from the Mediterranean during the afternoon. Residents have been urged to stay away from waterways, limit travel and keep abreast of developments as the situation evolves.
Neighbouring departments — Bouches-du-Rhône, Lozère, Ardèche and Vaucluse — are currently on yellow alert, though their warning levels could be raised depending on how conditions develop.
Intense Downpours and Hail Possible
Rainfall rates could reach 70 mm in under an hour, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 80 km/h and hail, Météo-France said, warning that “whirling phenomena” — a reference to possible tornadoes — cannot be excluded.
Total accumulations over the entire episode could reach 200 to 250 mm, with up to 300 mm in isolated spots. Should “very intense storm cells” and heavy rainfall materialise, a shift to red alert remains possible.
Memory of a Costly Season Opener
The warning comes after the season’s first Mediterranean episode at the end of September submerged Montpellier and its surrounding area under torrents of water, causing costly damage.
The new episode is expected to persist into Tuesday, with the orange alert due to lapse at 3:00 p.m., according to Météo-France. It is linked to a cold drop — a cut-off low-pressure system — named “Adam” over Spain, where authorities are also preparing for torrential rain on Monday after floods that have already claimed the life of a woman near Barcelona.
Respite Expected Midweek
From Wednesday, dry weather is set to settle over the Gard and Hérault, offering welcome relief after the storms, which risk swelling rivers and waterways.
However, a new band of rain is forecast to arrive from the west on Thursday and cross the country, though the Mediterranean region should be spared this time.
