Islamabad witnessed a ceremonious reception for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Prime Minister’s House on Thursday morning, marking the commencement of his two-day official visit to Pakistan. Upon his late-night arrival in Islamabad, President Erdogan was greeted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari in Rawalpindi.
The occasion was further enriched by a formal ceremony at the Prime Minister’s House, where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with federal ministers, extended a warm welcome to the Turkish leader. A contingent from the armed forces presented a guard of honor, and the national anthems of both countries were played. Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir was also present to greet President Erdogan, with the two leaders exchanging handshakes. The Turkish President was also honored with a salute from fighter jets in various formations.
During the event, Prime Minister Sharif introduced members of his cabinet to President Erdogan. The delegation included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Minister of State for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja. The two leaders also planted a commemorative tree at the Prime Minister’s House.
The visit is anticipated to witness the signing of various agreements aimed at boosting trade and investment between the two nations. Plans are in place to enhance the trade volume from the current $1 billion to $5 billion. Defense cooperation remains a pivotal aspect of the bilateral relationship, with discussions expected to explore further collaboration in this domain.
President Erdogan’s visit comes at a time when Turkey’s regional influence is on the rise. The leaders of both countries are set to deliberate on potential cooperation in post-war reconstruction in Syria and counter-terrorism measures. Turkey’s strong support for Muslim issues, particularly concerning Palestine and Kashmir, aligns with Pakistan’s foreign policy priorities. Discussions will also cover regional security concerns and humanitarian crises.
Efforts to expand the strategic economic framework between Pakistan and Turkey continue, with further negotiations anticipated during the visit.
