US and Israel Strike Iran as War Escalates in Middle East

The United States and Israel have launched military strikes against Iran, marking a major escalation in the regional conflict that continues to reverberate across the Middle East and beyond. As of Thursday, April 23, 2026, the war has entered a new phase, with significant implications for global energy markets, humanitarian conditions, and diplomatic efforts.

US Estimates Six Months to Clear Sea Mines in Strait of Hormuz

American military officials have estimated that it could take up to six months to clear sea mines planted in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. The mines, reportedly laid by Iranian forces, have severely disrupted maritime traffic, with Iran already claiming to have received its first revenue from tolls imposed on vessels navigating the waterway. Deputy speaker of the Iranian parliament, Hamidreza Hajibabaei, confirmed that the funds had been deposited into the Central Bank account, according to the Tasnim news agency.

Erdogan Warns Europe Weakening Under Strain of War

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned that the ongoing Middle East war is beginning to weaken Europe, as energy shortages, refugee flows, and economic disruptions take their toll. Speaking to reporters, Erdogan emphasized the need for a swift resolution to prevent further destabilization of the continent.

Iran Blames ‘Attackers’ for Fallout, Internet Blackout Continues

Iranian officials have blamed “attackers” for the fallout from the conflict, as the country faces an internet blackout now in its 55th consecutive day. The blackout has severely restricted communication and access to information for millions of Iranians, with no end in sight. Meanwhile, energy monitor Vortexa reported that over 10 million barrels of Iranian crude exited the Gulf in the week following the US naval blockade, with 34 movements of sanctioned tankers detected between April 13 and Monday.

Lebanon Reports 50,000 Homes Damaged or Destroyed

Lebanese authorities have reported that approximately 50,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed as a result of the conflict, with southern Lebanon bearing the brunt of the destruction. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have issued fresh warnings to residents in the region, cautioning against travel south of specific villages and near the Litani River, Wadi al-Salhani, and al-Saluqi. Israeli troops remain positioned in the area, and the military has captured a Hezbollah fighter from the elite Radwan Force, who surrendered after being identified.

Hezbollah Open to Ceasefire Extension Under Conditions

Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah stated that the group is willing to extend the current ceasefire arrangement, but only if Israel fully complies with all its terms. The US-mediated ceasefire, set to expire on Sunday, has led to a significant reduction in violence, but attacks have continued, including Israeli strikes that killed at least five people on Wednesday, including Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil. Lebanon is set to seek a ceasefire extension in US-hosted talks with Israel on Thursday.

UN Warns of Poverty Crisis as War Disrupts Food Supplies

UN development chief Alexander De Croo has warned that the Iran war is pushing more than 30 million people back into poverty. Disruptions to fuel and fertiliser supplies, exacerbated by the blockade of cargo vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, have already lowered agricultural productivity. “Food insecurity will be at its peak level in a few months – and there is not much that you can do about it,” De Croo told Reuters, adding that the effects of the war would persist even if it ended immediately.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue Amid Escalation

Diplomatic efforts are underway to de-escalate the conflict, with Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and US Charge d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker discussing preparations for a second round of talks in Islamabad. The meeting focused on the latest situation and efforts to convene further negotiations. However, with the war showing no signs of abating, the international community remains on edge as the crisis deepens.
