Chinese Fighter Zhang Weili Successfully Defends UFC Strawweight Title Against American Rival Tatiana Suarez
Chinese fighter Zhang Weili successfully defended her strawweight champion title in UFC 312 by defeating American opponent Tatiana Suarez. The fight took place on February 9, 2025, in the city of Sydney, Australia, where Zhang ended Suarez’s unbeaten record of 11-0, marking her third consecutive title defense. The match lasted five rounds, after which Zhang was declared the winner by unanimous decision. Speaking to the media post-fight, Zhang acknowledged Suarez’s determination, stating she could feel Suarez’s strong desire to win. Zhang emphasized the importance of challenging her opponent’s strengths to improve her own skills, encouraging fighters not to be afraid of their opponents’ abilities.
Coach Liang Renshuo from Beijing’s MMA praised Zhang’s mental toughness and control of the fight’s pace in addition to her technical prowess. He highlighted Zhang’s strategic defensive maneuvers and adaptability throughout the match. The fight began with Zhang taking the initiative with her attacks, which Suarez countered with a takedown. While Suarez attempted to gain control on the ground, Zhang effectively defended herself and avoided further submission attempts. In the second round, Zhang increased the speed of her attacks, ultimately bringing Suarez to the ground and maintaining control. By the third round, Suarez’s weaknesses became evident as Zhang landed significant strikes. In the fourth round, Suarez found herself at a clear disadvantage.
Liang noted, “Zhang demonstrated excellent defensive counterattacks against Suarez’s wrestling. Particularly in controlling the ground, she managed to evade Suarez’s attacks and tire her opponent out using her own game plan.” Zhang metaphorically described fighting as a game of wit and philosophy, likening it to water. She explained that like water, one must adapt their strategies and tactics according to their opponent’s techniques and style. Zhang’s journey in the UFC has been remarkable, starting with her victory over Jessica Andrade in 2019 to become China’s first UFC champion. Following a spectacular match against former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in 2022, she has become a renowned name in the sport.
Zhang revealed that her mother, who struggles to watch her fights due to the stress, receives video calls after each bout to reassure her of her well-being. On the other hand, the 34-year-old Suarez faced several challenges in her career, including injuries and cancer, forcing her to take a break from the sport for three years. Despite these setbacks, she continued her MMA journey with determination. Fang Tiao, a Chinese MMA enthusiast, praised Suarez for her resilience against cancer and severe injuries, highlighting her courage to face a formidable champion like Zhang. Zhang’s victory marks the beginning of a new chapter in her career, potentially setting up a showdown with flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.
