A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday at a construction site in Aubervilliers, claiming the life of a 50-year-old worker. The fatal accident occurred on the third floor of a building under construction on Avenue de la République in the city center. The worker was reportedly securing guards when he fell, resulting in an immediate fatality, according to witnesses. Another worker sustained minor injuries in the incident.
The deceased was employed by Silvas Metal, a metalwork and joinery company subcontracted by Soge Prom, the project’s primary developer. The development comprises 30 residential units, which are expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year.
The exact circumstances leading to the accident remain unclear, and an investigation is currently underway, as confirmed by a company official. Les Chouai, a spokesperson from the CGT union who promptly arrived at the scene, explained that the worker fell through a gap while installing a balcony when the support gave way. He pointed out several safety lapses at the site, particularly concerning pedestrian security measures.
In light of the incident, the CGT released a statement highlighting that over 1,000 workers perish annually in workplace accidents across France, marking the highest rate in the European Union. The Bobigny prosecutor’s office has launched an inquiry into charges of “involuntary manslaughter and injury,” with the investigation being handled by the Aubervilliers police station.
