Remembering Jamshed Ansari: 21 Years On

Remembering Jamshed Ansari: 21 Years On

Across Pakistan, admirers of Jamshed Ansari—one of the nation’s most beloved voices for radio, television, and film—are marking the 21st anniversary of his passing on Monday. The commemorations pay tribute to a performer whose career spanned more than four decades and whose work became woven into the cultural fabric of the country.

A Life Dedicated to Performance

Born in Saharanpur, India, on December 31, 1942, Jamshed Ansari migrated with his family to Pakistan in 1948 at the age of six. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964, but his true calling lay elsewhere. Over a career stretching beyond 40 years, Ansari amassed credits in over 200 television dramas, three films, and countless radio and stage plays.

The Voice That Defined an Era

For millions of Pakistanis, Ansari’s most enduring legacy is his role as Safdar in the long-running radio programme Hamid Mian Kay Haan. The show became a national institution, with listening to it evolving into a second habit for Pakistani households for more than four decades. His voice, warm and instantly recognisable, bridged generations of listeners.

From London to Lahore: A Formative Journey

Ansari’s path to stardom included a significant detour. He left for London, where he lived for four years, completing television production courses, performing in stage shows, and working for the BBC. This international experience sharpened his craft and broadened his perspective on broadcasting.

Upon returning to Pakistan in 1968, Ansari wasted no time making his mark. His first acting role was in the Lahore television play Jharokay, produced and telecast the same year. He soon followed with Ghora ghaas khata hai, written by Agha Nasir, which aired from Karachi television. From that point on, his presence on screen and behind the microphone became a constant.

Awards and Accolades

Ansari’s dedication to his craft did not go unrecognised. During his 41-year career in show business, he earned 55 national and two international awards. Among the most prominent were the Quaid-i-Azam Award and the Graduate Award, both testaments to his exceptional contribution to Pakistani arts and entertainment.

A Lasting Legacy

Jamshed Ansari passed away on August 24, 2005, after a battle with a brain tumor. His death left a void in the entertainment industry, but his work continues to resonate. From the intimacy of radio dramas to the visual storytelling of television, Ansari’s ability to connect with audiences remains a benchmark for aspiring actors.

As fans observe his 21st death anniversary, the tributes reflect not only nostalgia but a deep respect for an artist who gave his life to his craft. His voice may be silent, but the echoes of Safdar and countless other characters he brought to life continue to fill the airwaves and memories of a grateful nation.
