AJK Second Phase Polls Ready as Rivals Brace for Close Fight

AJK Second Phase Polls Ready as Rivals Brace for Close Fight

The charged political atmosphere across Azad Jammu and Kashmir fell silent at midnight as campaigning officially concluded for the crucial second phase of the general elections. The Election Commission of AJK confirmed that all logistical and security arrangements are in place for a smooth polling day on Sunday, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

Final Preparations for Polling Day

Voters will head to the ballot box in nine constituencies of the Muzaffarabad Division and 12 constituencies reserved for Kashmiri refugees residing in various parts of Pakistan. The electoral battle features a crowded field of 208 candidates, with 143 specifically vying for the refugee seats. Election authorities are mobilizing to accommodate more than 1.2 million registered voters expected to exercise their franchise.

To ensure law and order, the administration has devised a tiered security plan. A deployment of eight police personnel will guard the most sensitive polling stations, while six officers will be stationed at sensitive locations, and four at normal polling stations. This structured approach aims to guarantee a peaceful environment for voters.

Rigging Allegations Cast Shadow on Process

The final hours of campaigning were punctuated by significant political tension. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari intensified his party’s stance on electoral integrity, demanding open hearings for all complaints of alleged rigging arising from the first phase of the polls. In a statement released on social media, he asserted that the credibility of the entire electoral process hinges on visible fairness.

“The credibility of the first phase of the elections would be judged by the extent to which fairness, transparency and impartiality were ensured during the electoral process,” Bilawal stated, signaling that his party will be watching the second phase closely for any irregularities.

High Stakes for Major Parties

With the PML-N and PPP locked in a direct contest, the Muzaffarabad division has become the epicenter of political maneuvering. The outcome in these constituencies is expected to significantly influence the final composition of the Legislative Assembly. As the region prepares to vote, the election commission has reiterated its commitment to conducting free and fair polls, urging all stakeholders to respect the democratic process.
