Foreign Investors Return to PSX After 23-Month Gap

Foreign Investors Return to PSX After 23-Month Gap

In a significant shift of sentiment, foreign investors have turned net buyers at the Pakistan Exchange (PSX) for the first time in almost two years, injecting fresh capital and signaling a potential turnaround for the country’s financial markets at the dawn of the new fiscal year.

According to official data released on Saturday, overseas investors poured a net $34.4 million into the domestic equity market during July 2026. This marks a dramatic reversal from the preceding month, where net outflows had reached a staggering $180 million as foreign participants aggressively liquidated positions.

Breaking the Drought

The inflow represents the first instance of net buying in nearly 23 months, effectively ending a prolonged period of capital flight that had weighed heavily on market dynamics. Analysts suggest the renewed activity points to growing confidence in the economic stabilization measures and corporate earnings potential.

Sectoral Winners and Losers

The data reveals a clear preference among international portfolio managers for specific sectors. Banking stocks emerged as the primary beneficiary of this renewed interest, attracting the lion’s share of investment.

  • Banking Sector: Foreign investors acquired shares worth $13.8 million, dominating the buying activity.
  • Exploration & Production: The energy exploration sector followed, securing net investments totaling $6.7 million.

However, the buying spree was not universal. The data indicated that overseas investors maintained a cautious stance on cyclical industrials, choosing to offload holdings in the cement sector during the same period. This selective approach suggests a targeted strategy focusing on high-dividend-yielding and asset-heavy plays rather than a broad-based market rally driven by foreign capital.

The turnaround in July provides a much-needed psychological boost to the local bourse, which has been grappling with liquidity concerns and external account pressures. Market participants will be closely watching the August data to determine if this influx represents a sustainable trend or a tactical short-term repositioning.
