Pakistan Hails Hague Ruling on Indus Waters Treaty

QUETTA – Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti has hailed the unanimous ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague as a decisive legal and diplomatic triumph for Pakistan, asserting that the decision reinforces the enduring validity of the Indus Waters Treaty.

In an official statement, Bugti emphasized that the ruling confirmed the treaty remains in force and that India is legally bound by its obligations under the landmark water-sharing agreement. He described the outcome as a critical step in protecting Pakistan’s long-standing water rights.

Treaty Reaffirmed as Binding International Framework

According to the chief minister, the Indus Waters Treaty is far more than a bilateral arrangement for Pakistan. It constitutes a vital international legal framework directly tied to the nation’s water resources and core national interests.

“The unanimous decision strengthens Pakistan’s position that all parties to international agreements are responsible for honouring their commitments,” Bugti stated.

He added that the ruling reinforces fundamental principles of respect for international treaties, the supremacy of international law, and adherence to agreements reached between sovereign states.

Pakistan Vows to Protect Water Rights Through Legal Channels

Bugti affirmed that Pakistan would continue to employ constitutional, legal, and diplomatic avenues to safeguard its water rights. He termed the arbitration ruling an endorsement of Pakistan’s longstanding position and underscored the importance of resolving water-related disputes in accordance with international law.
