Mehedi Hasan Hridoy, a young left-arm fast bowler who represented the Chattogram Division Under-18 cricket team, has died of blood cancer while being transported to Dhaka for specialised medical treatment, Bangladeshi media reported on Sunday.
The promising pace bowler passed away inside the ambulance before it could reach the capital, according to the reports. He had been receiving care for the illness before his condition prompted the decision to move him to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
A Rising Talent in Chattogram
Hridoy was widely regarded as one of the more gifted emerging players in Chattogram’s junior cricket circuit, where his left-arm pace bowling marked him out as a prospect of note. His death has cut short a career that had only begun to take shape at the age-group level.
Financial Support Provided for Treatment
Both the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports had stepped in to assist with the cost of his care. According to the reports, each body provided Tk500,000 in July this year to support his treatment.
- The BCB contributed Tk500,000 toward Hridoy’s medical expenses.
- The Ministry of Youth and Sports provided a matching Tk500,000.
- Despite these efforts, the young bowler could not be saved.
BCB Offers Condolences
The Bangladesh Cricket Board expressed deep sorrow over the death of the young cricketer and extended its condolences to his bereaved family. The loss has resonated across the country’s age-group cricket structure, where Hridoy had been viewed as a player with a future in the game.
His death adds to the toll of serious illness among young athletes in the region and has renewed attention on the support systems available to emerging players facing major health crises.
