DZ Mafia Founder Arrested in Algeria After French Request

DZ Mafia Founder Arrested in Algeria After French Request

A suspected founding figure of the notorious DZ Mafia, a criminal organization dominating drug trafficking in Marseille, has been arrested in Algeria. The operation, executed on a French warrant, signals a potential breakthrough in cross-border judicial cooperation.

A High-Value Target Apprehended

Mehdi Laribi, a Franco-Algerian national, was taken into custody on July 31. French judicial sources, confirming an initial report by franceinfo, stated that Laribi is considered one of the original architects of the DZ Mafia. The group has expanded its narcotics operations far beyond its Marseille stronghold into other French cities.

While French authorities had issued an arrest warrant, Laribi was placed under judicial supervision rather than immediate detention following his apprehension. For years, investigators suspected he had sought refuge in Algeria, a country that typically does not extradite its own citizens, to remotely orchestrate the cartel’s activities.

Diplomatic Pressure Following Major Drug Raids

The arrest comes in the wake of a high-profile visit by French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin to Algeria in May. The diplomatic engagement appears to have prompted Algerian authorities to act on the long-standing French warrant. Darmanin publicly celebrated the move, describing Laribi as a “priority target” in the fight against organized crime.

This development follows the massive “Octopus” operation, a sweeping French police action that led to dozens of arrests. In March, three other key DZ Mafia figures—Amine Oualane, Gabriel Ory, and Madhi Z.—were indicted. Oualane and Ory were already incarcerated and are accused of running criminal networks from their prison cells. All three were subsequently transferred to high-security facilities specifically designated for major drug traffickers.

The arrest of Laribi marks a significant blow to the leadership structure of the DZ Mafia, an organization that has been linked to a surge in drug-related violence across France. The cooperation between Paris and Algiers in this case may set a new precedent for future joint efforts against transnational criminal networks.
