A grueling two-week battle against one of the worst wildfires in modern French history has reached a critical turning point. Officials announced on Wednesday, August 5, that firefighters have finally gained full control of the monstrous blaze that devoured the landscape of Gironde.
Sophie Brocas, the prefect of Gironde, delivered the long-awaited news on local radio station Ici Gironde. “The firefighters are masters of the fire,” she declared, marking a significant victory after the inferno was initially considered “fixed” on Saturday, August 1.
A Scar Across the Land
The final toll is staggering. The flames consumed more than 40,000 hectares of forest, making it the most destructive wildfire in France since the “Great Fire” of 1949. That historic tragedy, which also occurred in Gironde, engulfed 52,000 hectares and claimed 82 lives. The recent megafire first ignited two weeks ago near the commune of Saumos.
Despite the breakthrough, the danger is far from over. Prefect Brocas emphasized that an extensive surveillance operation will continue for days to come. “Firefighters will keep monitoring for days and days because smoldering embers and fumaroles must be watched to avoid any reignition of the fire,” she explained.
Vigilance Against Reignition
To prevent a catastrophic restart, nearly 600 firefighters remain on the front lines this Wednesday. Their mission has shifted from direct attack to meticulous prevention. Crews are focusing on extensive tree felling and a process called “croquer,” which involves splitting and ripping out the stumps of already-cut trees. This painstaking work creates vast firebreaks to starve any potential new flames of fuel.
As the smoke clears, attention is turning to the enormous task of recovery and indemnification for the hundreds of victims who lost homes and businesses. More than 250 buildings were destroyed by the fire. The economic fallout also heavily impacts foresters and the tourism sector, which has suffered immensely from the catastrophe.
Rebuilding an Economy and a Forest
The local forest industry is a vital economic engine. Prefect Brocas noted it is a sector “that has a turnover of 10 billion euros and supports 60,000 people.” The crisis has reached the highest levels of government, with a minister urging holidaymakers to show “solidarity with these beautiful territories” by not canceling their vacations. Various state support measures, including negotiations with insurers and an expansion of technical unemployment schemes, have already been activated.
Looking to the future, the conversation is already turning toward reconstruction and adaptation. Following President Emmanuel Macron’s call to “rebuild a different forest,” Prefect Brocas stated the need to “resume a normal life and reflect on this wonderful forest with which we must learn to live at four degrees hotter.” This ambitious and sobering program is set to define the long recovery phase now beginning for the devastated region.
