Flooded homes, mass evacuations, and paralyzed transport networks—exceptional flooding continues to severely disrupt life in western France this Friday. Authorities warn the crisis is far from over, with peak river levels expected to persist throughout the weekend and beyond.
“Floods Will Continue,” Warns National Vigilance Service
Vigicrues, the national flood monitoring service, issued a stark update Friday morning, stating the flooding “will continue all weekend, and possibly longer.” Lucie Chadourne-Facon, director of the central Vigicrues service, emphasized that a break in the rainfall does not signal an end to the danger.
“The lull in the rain absolutely does not mean the floods are stopping for us,” she explained during a videoconference. “Overall, water levels will recede very slowly given the heights reached in the rivers and the current saturation of the soil.”
Government Pledges Swift Aid Amid Total Mobilization
The scale of the disaster has prompted a high-level government response. On Thursday, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu declared that “the floods in the West require total mobilization,” promising victims “compensation as quickly as possible.”
The emergency is concentrated in three departments that remain under a red flood alert—the highest warning level—for Friday and Saturday, indicating a significant threat to life.
A Slow and Uncertain Recovery Ahead
With many areas still submerged and river systems overwhelmed, the path to recovery appears long. The saturated ground cannot absorb more water, and major waterways are at critical levels, leading to predictions of a protracted and challenging cleanup operation once the waters finally begin to subside.
