Attack in Guanajuato Leaves Multiple Minors Injured
An armed attack in a public park in central Mexico has resulted in two fatalities and left at least eight children wounded, according to local authorities. The incident occurred Tuesday evening in San Francisco del Rincón, a city of approximately 80,000 inhabitants in Guanajuato state.
Gerardo Vásquez, the state’s attorney general, confirmed that a 36-year-old man died at the scene. A second victim, aged 24, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital.
Young Victims and Community Trauma
The municipal government reported that three of the eight injured minors have been discharged from the hospital, while the remaining five are “out of danger.” Their specific ages were not disclosed.
Guanajuato Governor Libia Dennise Garcia denounced the act on social media platform X as “absolutely unacceptable,” emphasizing that “girls, boys, and adolescents” were among the wounded. She pledged state support for the affected families and promised to “act with firmness, responsibility, and with the full force of the state.”
Eyewitness Accounts of Chaos
Residents described a scene of panic as gunfire erupted around 9:30 PM while children were playing in the park. “I was washing my daughter when we heard about twenty [gunshots],” said one mother who requested anonymity. Upon investigating, she heard women screaming “that there were children” hurt.
Bullet impacts were visible on at least one house facing the park. One child, who did not sustain serious injuries, was found with bullet fragments in their back, according to AFP journalists at the scene.
Local residents indicated the park is known as a gathering spot for gang members. “This makes four shootings,” claimed one neighbor, who also asked for anonymity, adding, “It was truly horrible to see all those children running in every direction.”
Ongoing Gang Violence in Guanajuato
The state prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the attack. Guanajuato, while a flourishing industrial hub and popular tourist destination, remains one of Mexico’s most violent states due to territorial wars between criminal gangs, primarily the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel.
This incident follows other recent mass shootings in the state. Last month, eleven people were killed in an attack on a soccer field in Salamanca. In June, a shooting at a neighborhood party in Irapuato left eleven dead and about twenty wounded.
National Context of Violence
While Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated earlier this year that the national homicide rate had fallen in 2025 to its lowest level in a decade, violence linked to organized crime continues to plague several regions, including Guanajuato. The persistent conflict between rival cartels for control of trafficking routes and local territories frequently spills into public spaces, putting civilians at constant risk.
