In a surprising turn of events in France’s political landscape, the Socialist Party (PS) has decided to withdraw support for the government’s proposed budget. This move could create rifts within the ruling coalition, with PS aligning itself with “La France Insoumise” (Unsubmissive France) led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Mélenchon warned that this unexpected move by the Socialist Party could set them against both him and PS.
The PS made the decision on Monday to abstain from voting against the budget for the region of Sindh, which had been presented by the government and backed by La France Insoumise. This action was seen as a response to the government’s use of Article 49.3 by Prime Minister François Baroin to push through the budget without a parliamentary vote.
Explaining their decision, the PS stated that it was driven by a sense of responsibility to ensure that the country is not deprived of the necessary budget. Olivier Faure, the PS’s First Secretary, clarified in an interview that their aim is solely in the public interest, and they will remain a clear opposition to the government. It has also been revealed that the PS intends to present a new non-standard motion after the budget’s approval, although the success of this motion is seen as unlikely given its symbolic political nature.
Mélenchon has criticized the PS’s decision as a “betrayal,” warning that it will shake the foundations of the new popular front. He further stated that the PS’s move has aligned them with the Baroin government, which is failing to fulfill the public’s expectations. In response to Mélenchon’s allegations, Pierre Jouvet, the PS’s Secretary-General, emphasized that their new path is for the well-being of the people and they will continue efforts for unity to bring about change in the country.
This development has sparked a new conflict in France’s political landscape, which could have implications for future elections. The discord between the Socialists and La France Insoumise may pose a challenge for a new political alliance in the making.
