HANGU: A devastating militant assault on the Khazina Banda checkpoint in Khyber Pakhtunkwa’s Hangu district resulted in the martyrdom of eleven police personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), late Tuesday. Security forces retaliated with overwhelming force, killing fifteen attackers during a prolonged clearance operation.
According to a police spokesperson, the officers mounted a robust defense despite the intensity of the initial ambush. During the heavy exchange of fire, DSP Diyar Khan was among those who made the ultimate sacrifice. District Police Officer (DPO) Mujahid Hussain confirmed that twenty-eight officers sustained injuries in the battle and have been transported to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.
Clearance Operation Underway Following Deadly Ambush
The militants, identified by authorities as belonging to Fitna al-Khawarij, engaged security forces with sophisticated weaponry before setting fire to three police vehicles. Reports indicate the attackers also seized a police vehicle during the chaos. In response, security forces quickly cordoned off the entire area, launching an intensive search operation to neutralize any remaining threats.
Senior police officials emphasized that the injured personnel are receiving the highest standard of medical care. They vowed that the blood of the martyred officers would not be shed in vain, reaffirming the force’s commitment to eradicating terrorism from the region. The fallen officers were laid to rest following funeral prayers attended by a large gathering of mourners and fellow officers.
Interior Minister Vows to Avenge Sacrifices
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi strongly condemned the terrorist attack on Wednesday, stating that the brave policemen thwarted the nefarious designs of Fitna al-Khawarij by sacrificing their lives. In an official statement, Naqvi paid rich tribute to the martyrs and expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
“Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police is on the front line in the war against terrorism. I salute their eternal sacrifices,” the minister stated, while also praying for the swift recovery of the wounded officers. The operation remains active as security forces continue to secure the perimeter and hunt for fleeing militants.
