PSX Plunges Over 900 Points Amid Regional Tensions

PSX Plunges Over 900 Points Amid Regional Tensions

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a sharp sell-off on Thursday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index plunging by more than 900 points to hit 175,110 during early trading hours. The decline extended the previous session’s significant losses, underscoring growing investor anxiety fueled by geopolitical instability and global market volatility.

A Second Day of Heavy Losses

The market opened firmly in the red, continuing the downward momentum from Wednesday when the index had already shed 1,580 points to close at 176,042. The sustained pressure highlights a fragile sentiment on the trading floor, as participants grapple with a mix of domestic and international headwinds.

Global and Regional Headwinds Weigh on Sentiment

The local bourse’s downturn coincided with a choppy session across Asian markets, where stocks struggled for direction following a turbulent week sparked by anxieties over artificial intelligence investments. The uncertainty was compounded by a divided U.S. Federal Reserve holding rates steady, leaving bond markets searching for clarity on future monetary policy.

Simultaneously, oil markets added to the complexity. Brent crude futures slipped below the $90 per barrel mark after a dramatic 7% surge the previous day, driven by escalating fighting in the Middle East. Despite the conflict, shipping data indicated that tankers were still navigating out of the region, tempering immediate supply fears.

In broader Asian trade, South Korea’s KOSPI fell 0.6% in volatile trading, heading for a steep weekly slump that prompted authorities to unveil market-stabilization measures. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was flat, while Japan’s Nikkei rose 1.2% but remained on track for a weekly loss.

Investor Outlook

Market analysts suggest that the combination of regional instability and erratic global cues is likely to keep the PSX under pressure in the near term. With the KSE-100 Index breaching key psychological levels, investors are expected to maintain a cautious stance, closely monitoring geopolitical developments and foreign fund flows for signs of stabilization.
