Himalayan Glaciers Near Tipping Point, Study Warns

Himalayan Glaciers Near Tipping Point, Study Warns

KATHMANDU — The Himalayas are approaching a critical tipping point as glaciers melt faster than they did a decade ago, threatening water security across a vast region expected to reach “peak water” by the middle of this century, according to a study released this month.

The findings arrive in the wake of a catastrophic Himalayan glacier collapse in late August along the Nepal-Tibet border, which triggered cascading landslides and flash floods through the valleys below.

At least 1,300 people have been confirmed dead and more than 5,300 remain missing across Nepal and China’s Tibet region, underscoring the human cost of an increasingly unstable mountain landscape.

Unstable Lakes Threaten Millions Downstream

As glaciers retreat, they are leaving behind unstable glacial lakes held back by little more than loose rock and ice, perched above valleys where millions of people live, the study found.

The research was produced by Systemiq, a sustainability advisory firm, together with the Integrated Mountain Initiative, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, and India’s GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment.

According to the study, Himalayan glacier mass loss has accelerated in recent decades, yet only 21 glaciers are currently monitored on the ground out of an estimated 40,000 glaciers across the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region — a vast mountain system spanning eight countries from Afghanistan to Myanmar.

High-Risk Glacial Lakes Identified in India

Close to 200 glacial lakes in India have been identified as high risk, with 56 classified as “very high risk,” leaving millions of people exposed downstream.

As the region nears “peak water” — the point at which river flows stop rising and begin to decline — the consequences for water security would be profound.

  • The Himalayas underpin more than 20 percent of India’s GDP, forming a key piece of the country’s national economic infrastructure.
  • Hundreds of millions of people depend on the mountain system for water and livelihood.
  • Though the Himalayan region makes up around 18 percent of India’s land area, it accounts for roughly 35 percent of the country’s natural disasters.

The study’s warnings add urgency to calls for expanded glacier monitoring and risk assessment across a region where the margin between a stable water supply and a catastrophic flood grows narrower with each passing year.
