Party Leader Draws Line in Sand as Government Denies Any Negotiations
As Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan remains incarcerated, a senior party leader has declared that the former prime minister will not seek freedom through a political deal akin to the one involving his rival, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif.
Barrister Umair Niazi of the PTI stated that Imran Khan is unwilling to pay the price of concessions required in such negotiations. “When you sit in these kinds of negotiations, you have to give many concessions too. The biggest example before us is of Nawaz [Sharif],” Niazi said during an appearance on Geo News’ “Capital Talk.”
He elaborated that Nawaz Sharif “paid a price for those negotiations; he had to leave practical politics, had to leave the country, go into exile, and had to sign a paper deal.” When asked if Imran Khan’s refusal stemmed from a desire to avoid becoming “another Nawaz,” Niazi confirmed, “It is exactly that kind of situation.”
Government Firmly Denies Any Deal or Concession
The PTI’s position comes amid persistent speculation about backchannel talks. Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has categorically denied any such developments. “There is no deal or concession regarding Imran,” Tarar stated in a social media post. “He is a convicted criminal and the news regarding concession is baseless.”
This follows a history of failed dialogue. In early 2025, talks mediated by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq collapsed after the PTI withdrew, citing the government’s failure to meet its demands regarding judicial commissions for past political events.
New “Release Force” and Post-Ramadan Plans Announced
With negotiations at a standstill, the PTI is exploring other avenues. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi recently announced the formation of an “Imran Khan Release Force.” Special Assistant to the KP CM, Shafiullah Jan, clarified the plan, stating the force would be a peaceful, non-political entity open to any young person and would dissolve upon Imran Khan’s release.
Jan also addressed the recent end to protest sit-ins, attributing it to Peshawar High Court orders and the holy month of Ramadan. “We are thinking about something else, planning something else. We will come again, God willing, after Ramadan,” he said, hinting at renewed agitation.
Health Concerns and Legal Hurdles Compound Political Deadlock
The political stalemate is underscored by growing concerns over Imran Khan’s health, particularly regarding a deteriorating eye condition. His imprisonment continues to be a central point of contention between the opposition and the ruling coalition.
Commenting on the situation, PML-N Senator Rana Sanaullah suggested that no political breakthrough is possible without confidence-building measures among Pakistan’s top political figures, whom he identified as Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, Imran Khan, and one other. He also indicated that family and legal meetings for Imran Khan during Ramadan could be restricted if street protests were initiated.
As Ramadan begins, the stage is set for a potential new phase of political confrontation, with the PTI vowing to continue its struggle for its founder’s release, firmly rejecting what it sees as a compromised path to freedom.
