The president of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), Tariq Bugti, has resigned from his post, citing a severe funding dispute with the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) that he claims crippled the national team’s recent tour of Australia. The federation also imposed a two-year ban on team captain Ammad Shakeel Butt for alleged misconduct.
Funding Failure and Allegations of Mismanagement
At a press conference in Lahore, Bugti stated the PHF lacked the financial resources to cover expenses for the FIH Pro League matches in Australia. He alleged the PSB, which was directed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to release funds, failed to make timely payments for critical costs like hotel bookings.
“I personally visited the PSB office to request the immediate release of funds but was informed the process could take up to two months,” Bugti claimed. He appealed to the PM and Army Chief to form an investigative committee.
Inquiry Holds Federation Responsible
Meanwhile, Adviser to the PM Rana Sanaullah confirmed a three-member inquiry committee formed by the PSB has completed its probe and submitted its report. Sources indicate the committee’s findings hold the PHF itself accountable for the tour’s failures.
Captain Banned Amidst Player Welfare Scandal
In a related disciplinary move, Bugti announced a two-year ban on Captain Ammad Shakeel Butt, accusing him of threatening players and running a campaign against the federation’s management. This action follows serious allegations made by Butt upon the team’s return.
Players Forced into Menial Labor
The controversy erupted after social media videos showed players in poor accommodation during the Australia tour. Captain Butt confirmed the reports, detailing shocking conditions.
“Players were made to perform menial tasks, including cleaning kitchens, washing dishes, laundering their own clothes, and scrubbing washrooms before heading to the field for training and matches,” Butt stated at Lahore airport. He described it as mental harassment and mismanagement no professional athlete should face.
The resignations and bans mark a dramatic low for Pakistani hockey, with the sport’s administration in turmoil and player welfare under intense scrutiny.
