In a move set to shake up the local political scene, the Marseille prosecutor’s office has announced the opening of an investigation into allegations against Martine Vassal, the head of the Metropolis and the Bouches-du-Rhône Department. This development follows a whistleblower claim from a former staff member.
The probe addresses accusations of “embezzlement of public funds, influence peddling, and corruption.” Vassal, who is a prominent figure in local politics and a potential contender for the mayoral seat in the upcoming 2026 elections, has dismissed the allegations as a “political maneuver.”
Two separate preliminary investigations have been initiated by the prosecutor’s office. The first stems from the complaint made by Erwan Davoux, a senior civil servant who accused Vassal of various financial misconducts. The second investigation targets Davoux himself, following counterclaims by Vassal of “blackmail and incitement to hatred.” These claims emerged after Davoux’s contract with the department was not renewed.
Details have surfaced regarding allegedly extravagant official trips to Rome, New York, and Armenia, undertaken by Vassal in 2022 and 2024. Additionally, she is accused of allocating “patronage” grants to certain ethnic associations in Marseille.
Davoux has also raised concerns about Vassal’s relationship with her chief of staff, Marc Jolibois. He pointed out that political integrity laws prohibit appointing one’s spouse or partner to a cabinet position. However, Vassal’s legal representative, Pierre Bruno, refuted these claims, clarifying that Vassal was not married or in a formal partnership with Jolibois.
The lawyer further argued that Davoux, who was responsible for organizing the very trips he criticizes, is embroiled in a conflict with the department following his contractual termination in January 2025 after discord with elected officials and colleagues.
Vassal, expected to be a strong candidate in the coming local elections, perceived these allegations as attempts to undermine her bid for the Marseille mayoralty. She stated emphatically on social media, “The political maneuvers aimed at discrediting my candidacy do not justify these baseless allegations.”
The ongoing investigations and political repercussions continue to unfold, leaving the city’s residents and political observers on edge as the 2026 elections approach.
