Iran’s World Cup Debuthadowed by War and Protest

Iran’s World Cup Debuthadowed by War and Protest

The whistle blew at SoFi Stadium, but the roar that followed was never going to be just about football. For Iran’s national team, their first match of the 2026 World Cup against New Zealand on Monday night was a volatile cocktail of sport, grief, and geopolitics, played out just hours after Washington and Tehran announced a tentative deal to end a devastating three-and-a-half-month war in the Middle East.

As the final score settled at 2-2, the match inside the world’s most expensive stadium left an indelible mark not on the scoreboard, but in a series of stark, politically charged images that have come to define the tournament’s opening week.

A Stadium Divided Before Kickoff

The tension was palpable long before the players took the field. Outside the gleaming Los Angeles venue, members of the Iranian diaspora protested against the Islamic Republic. Inside, the defiance continued. Hundreds of supporters brandished the Lion and Sun, a potent symbol of pre-1979 Iran, during the national anthem, which was audibly jeered by sections of the crowd. The display was a direct challenge to Iranian officials, who had publicly reminded FIFA of its responsibility to ensure only the current national flag was visible and had threatened to halt the match should banned emblems appear.

A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that staff were instructed to identify such flags, issue a warning to the bearer, and potentially eject them. FIFA regulations prohibit any accessories of a “political nature,” yet enforcement remains notoriously inconsistent. Despite the warnings, the forbidden flags flew openly as fans then rallied noisily behind the players.

The Celebration That Shocked the World

The match’s most controversial moment arrived in the 64th minute. Iranian striker Mohammad Mohebi, having just equalized, turned to the stands and mimed firing a gun into the air. The gesture, evocative of a shooting, instantly sparked global debate and became one of the most searing images of the young tournament.

The political messaging was not confined to the pitch. In the stands behind one of the goals, dozens of Iranian supporters briefly unfurled a banner cut into several pieces. It bore a chilling number: “168.” This was a reference to the initial death toll from the bombing of the Minab school in Iran on February 28, the first day of the war with the United States. Tehran has since revised the tragic figure down to 155 dead, including 120 children.

The tribute echoed a gesture made by the players themselves upon their arrival in Mexico over a week earlier, when they wore golden pins reading “#168” on their suit jackets.

“The Most Mistreated Team” and a FIFA President’s Visit

The Iranian squad’s journey to this point has been fraught. Until recent weeks, their very entry into the United States was uncertain. Forced into a last-minute base camp in Tijuana and hampered by the absence of U.S. visas for around fifteen staff members, head coach Amir Ghalenoei has labeled his side the “most mistreated” team in the World Cup. Yet, he maintains a desire to separate the ball “from politics.”

Following the emotionally charged draw, FIFA President Gianni Infantino made an unannounced visit to the Iranian locker room. In a speech captured by the Iranian federation’s video and reported by RMC Sport, he addressed the players directly. “I know what you are going through, I understand, but you are stronger than everything,” Infantino said, to polite applause. “You are sending a message to the whole world. Tonight, you united the entire stadium here behind you, behind ‘Team Melli.’ You showed the world and sent a powerful message. Thank you very much.”

Iran, still seeking to advance past the group stage for the first time in its history, will return to Los Angeles to face Belgium on June 21, before a final group match against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
