Pakistan’s FIA Launches Crypto Investigation Unit

Pakistan's FIA Launches Crypto Investigation Unit

In a decisive move to tighten the reins on the booming digital asset market, Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has operationalized a dedicated Cryptocurrency Investigation Unit. The formation of this specialized cell, directed by the FIA Director General, signals a significant escalation in the country’s capacity to police virtual currencies.

A Targeted Mandate Against Financial Crime

The newly established unit is tasked with a broad and critical mandate. According to FIA officials, the team will spearhead investigations into complex financial crimes facilitated by cryptocurrencies, including money laundering, terrorism financing, and large-scale digital asset fraud. The unit is also empowered to proactively monitor suspicious financial transactions to detect and intercept illegal activities before they escalate.

The investigative approach will be distinctly modern. Officials confirmed that the team will employ cutting-edge forensic tools and adhere to international standards and best practices. This technical capability is designed to unravel the sophisticated methods used in cybercrime and cryptocurrency-related offenses, ensuring that perpetrators cannot exploit jurisdictional or technological loopholes.

Regulatory Push Amid Explosive Retail Adoption

The launch of the investigation unit is the latest in a series of aggressive regulatory maneuvers by Islamabad. Pakistan has rapidly emerged as one of the world’s leading markets for cryptocurrency retail adoption, a trend that has prompted the government to balance innovation with robust oversight. The FIA believes this dedicated unit will significantly enhance Pakistan’s ability to combat financial crimes within the evolving digital economy.

This law enforcement enhancement runs parallel to a formalization of the crypto industry. The government recently established the Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (PVARA), appointing Bilal Bin Saqib as its chairman to oversee the licensing, supervision, and regulation of virtual asset businesses. Licenses for cryptocurrency exchanges are expected to be issued in the coming months.

From “Crypto Diplomacy” to Domestic Enforcement

The crackdown on illicit flows comes even as Pakistan explores the legitimate potential of digital assets on the international stage. In a move termed “crypto diplomacy,” Islamabad previously announced a cooperation agreement with an affiliate of World Liberty Financial, the venture associated with the family of US President Donald Trump. The initiative aims to explore the use of a USD1 stablecoin for cross-border payments, signaling a dual strategy of leveraging blockchain for economic engagement while strictly policing its criminal misuse at home.
