Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the federal government’s unwavering commitment to collaborating with the newly formed administration in Gilgit-Baltistan. The pledge is aimed squarely at accelerating public welfare and driving regional prosperity through a series of high-impact development initiatives.
The assurance came during a high-level meeting with the newly elected Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Amjad Hussain, in Islamabad. The prime minister extended his formal congratulations to Hussain on assuming office, setting a positive tone for future inter-governmental cooperation.
Strategic Focus on Energy and Education
During the discussions, both leaders reviewed the political and developmental landscape of the northern region. PM Shehbaz outlined a clear federal strategy designed to unlock Gilgit-Baltistan’s potential, with a sharp focus on renewable energy, tourism, and social sector upgrades.
Central to the federal agenda is the launch of a 100-megawatt solar energy initiative. This project is positioned as a top priority to harness the region’s natural resources and address energy security. In parallel, the government is fast-tracking the establishment of ‘Knowledge Schools’ to modernize the educational infrastructure and create new opportunities for the youth.
Infrastructure and E-Governance Expansion
Beyond power and education, the prime minister detailed plans to strengthen public service delivery. A key component of this strategy is the proposed establishment of a Pakistan Easy Center in Gilgit. The facility is designed to streamline citizen access to government services, significantly reducing bureaucratic hurdles for residents.
The comprehensive development blueprint also encompasses health, infrastructure, and tourism sectors. The prime minister emphasized that these sectors are critical for generating employment and boosting the local economy, ensuring that the benefits of progress reach every corner of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The meeting was attended by senior federal leadership, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, and Minister for Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, signaling a whole-of-government approach to the region’s uplift.
