Pakistan, US Advance Talks on Reciprocal Trade Deal

High-level economic diplomacy between Islamabad and Washington gained fresh momentum this week as senior officials convened to advance negotiations on a bilateral reciprocal trade framework. The meeting signals a concerted push to cement a deal that could reshape commercial ties between the two long-standing partners.

A Shared Commitment to Swift Conclusion

Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, met with United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Jamieson Greer to review the trajectory of the ongoing talks. Both sides acknowledged that technical negotiations have progressed significantly and expressed a firm resolve to conclude the agreement at the earliest possible date.

Recalling prior discussions in Washington, DC, the finance minister praised the constructive engagement that has defined the dialogue. The meeting underscored a mutual desire to move beyond procedural reviews and lock in a framework that delivers tangible economic benefits.

Aligning Trade with Pakistan’s Economic Vision

Senator Aurangzeb emphasized that maintaining the current pace of negotiations is critical to Pakistan’s macroeconomic strategy. He argued that a fortified trade and investment partnership with the United States would directly fuel Pakistan’s export-led growth model, enhance economic resilience, and unlock new commercial opportunities for businesses on both sides.

The finance minister also highlighted the strategic importance of deepening collaboration with the U.S. Export-Import Bank (EXIM). Such cooperation is viewed as a vital lever to facilitate cross-border trade and attract much-needed investment into Pakistan’s key sectors.

Washington Acknowledges Reform Progress

Ambassador Greer recognized Pakistan’s sustained engagement and noted the progress made on critical structural issues. He specifically cited advancements in labour and regulatory reforms, including compliance measures related to forced labour. These steps are seen as essential prerequisites for building a durable and equitable trade architecture.

The USTR chief reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to the positive trajectory of discussions and voiced confidence that remaining technical hurdles could be cleared through continued expert-level engagement.

Next Steps: Accelerating Technical Engagement

Both principals agreed on the necessity of accelerating technical-level discussions to capitalize on the groundwork already laid. The meeting concluded with a consensus to maintain regular high-level and technical contact, aiming to swiftly resolve outstanding elements of the framework.

The session was also attended by Federal Secretary for Commerce, Jawad Paul, alongside senior team members from the Office of the USTR. The presence of key trade officials on both sides underscores the seriousness with which the two governments are approaching the finalization of this landmark economic pact.
