The Punjab government has extended its prohibition on flying drones in open spaces across the province for an additional 30 days, citing ongoing security concerns. The decision, announced by the Punjab Home Department, comes as authorities continue to prioritize public safety and the maintenance of law and order.
Legal Framework and Scope of the Ban
The extension has been imposed under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898. Under the renewed order, the use of outdoor drones remains strictly prohibited throughout Punjab. However, the ban includes specific exemptions for controlled environments and essential services.
Small drones may still be operated during events held inside halls and marquees, provided that event organizers assume full responsibility for their safe use. This limited allowance aims to balance security measures with the needs of private gatherings and indoor functions.
Exemptions for Security Agencies and Specialized Use
Intelligence and law enforcement agencies are entirely exempt from the ban, ensuring that security operations can continue without interruption. Additionally, drones may be deployed for agricultural, irrigation, and research purposes, but only after obtaining written permission from the district-level “Safe Drone Usage Committee.”
According to the Home Department, any drone use for these approved purposes will be considered exempt from the ban once written authorization is granted by the committee. This structured approval process is designed to prevent misuse while supporting legitimate technological applications.

A spokesperson for the Home Department emphasized that public safety, the protection of property, and the maintenance of law and order remain the Punjab government’s top priorities. District administrations and police forces across the province have been directed to ensure strict implementation of the orders.
