Tragedy Strikes During Eid Welfare Payouts
At least eight women were killed and more than 80 others injured when the roof of a shop collapsed in Rahim Yar Khan, Punjab, during a cash distribution under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). The incident occurred in Chak 123P as a large crowd of women had gathered to collect quarterly welfare payments ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Overcrowding Blamed for Structural Failure
Rescue officials stated the roof gave way under the weight of the crowd. According to initial reports, the shopkeeper allegedly directed some of the more than 100 women onto the roof while others remained inside the building. District Police Officer Irfan Samo confirmed the incident was linked to the aid distribution event.
Rescue teams and police personnel worked to pull survivors from the debris, transporting the injured to Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan. Hospital sources reported many victims suffered head injuries, broken legs, and fractured arms, with several in critical condition.
Police Case Filed, Agent Held Responsible
A case has been registered at the Airport Police Station. Five individuals, including the private retailer’s device agent responsible for the biometric verification system, have been named. The DPO stated the device agent has been held primarily responsible for the accident.
Recurring Hazard During Ramadan Aid Distributions
The tragedy highlights a persistent danger in Pakistan: overcrowding and safety failures at aid distribution points, particularly during Ramadan. The BISP provides essential quarterly cash payments to low-income families, primarily benefiting women. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, including a 2023 stampede at a Karachi distribution centre that killed at least 11 women and children.
National Leaders React, Order Investigations
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed profound sorrow and directed authorities to provide the best possible care for the injured. He called for a swift completion of rescue operations and urged relevant provincial governments to enforce building safety regulations, conduct thorough investigations, and implement measures to prevent future tragedies.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif also expressed deep grief, extended condolences to the bereaved families, and directed authorities to ensure optimal medical treatment for the injured. She sought an immediate report from the District Commissioner.
BISP Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid expressed serious concern, noting that the beneficiary women had placed their trust in the programme for support and protection.
