Federal and Provincial Governments Move to Ease Financial Burden
In a move aimed at providing financial relief ahead of the festive period, the federal government of Pakistan has directed the early disbursement of March salaries and pensions for its employees. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued the directive to ensure public servants receive their funds well before Eid ul Fitr, expected to be celebrated in late March 2026.
Sindh Government Leads with Advance Payments
Following a similar initiative, the Sindh provincial government had already announced last week that it would release March salaries, allowances, and pensions in advance for all Muslim employees and pensioners. According to an official notification, these payments were scheduled for release on March 16, 2026. This includes personnel under work-charged and contingent paid establishments.
Eid ul Fitr Dates and Official Holidays
The decision for early payments is linked to the anticipated Eid ul Fitr dates. While the final date is subject to the sighting of the Shawwal moon, experts and the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) suggest Eid is likely to fall on March 21, 2026, following a 30-day Ramadan.
In a related development, the federal Cabinet Division has officially declared a two-day public holiday for Eid ul Fitr. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved March 20 and March 21 as holidays for all federal government offices, applicable to both five-day and six-day working week schedules.
Coordinated Relief Efforts
These coordinated measures by the federal and Sindh governments are designed to facilitate better financial planning and Eid preparations for millions of government employees and pensioners across the country. The advance disbursement of funds allows individuals to manage festive expenses, including shopping and family gatherings, without the strain of waiting for the regular pay cycle.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will make the final announcement regarding the official commencement of Eid ul Fitr based on moon sighting.
