Massive Barrage Details
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that Russian forces launched more than 34,000 projectiles against Ukraine during the three winter months. In a social media statement, Zelensky detailed that this included over 14,670 guided bombs, 738 missiles, and nearly 19,000 attack drones, predominantly Russian-Iranian designed Shahed models.
Record Missile Attacks in February
According to an AFP analysis of Ukrainian data, Russia fired more missiles in February 2026 than in any month since early 2023. The count reached 288 missiles, a 113% increase from January’s 135, primarily targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during nighttime assaults. This surpasses the previous record of 270 missiles in October 2025.
Human Cost and Recent Attacks
The relentless bombardment continues to extract a heavy human toll. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, a Russian strike recently killed one man and wounded four others. Separately, a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia’s Bryansk region resulted in one civilian death, according to local authorities.
In the latest large-scale assault, Russia launched 123 drones overnight into March 1st. Ukrainian air defenses reported intercepting or electronically jamming 110 of them, though 13 reached targets across seven locations.
International Dimension and Sanctions Enforcement
The conflict’s international linkages were underscored by a joint Belgian-French military operation in the North Sea. Forces boarded the Ethera, an oil tanker part of Russia’s “shadow fleet” and linked to Iranian interests, escorting it to the port of Zeebrugge for detention. The vessel is under European and US sanctions for contributing to Russian energy revenues funding the war.
President Zelensky connected the weaponry used against Ukraine to broader global conflicts, noting that the same Shahed drones are now employed by Iran in the Middle East. He stated, “Evil must be fought everywhere in the world,” arguing that determined international action can hold aggressors accountable.
Enduring Ukrainian Resilience
As the war enters its fifth year, Ukrainian soldiers express a weary determination. One soldier, identified only as Denys, reflected a common sentiment, stating, “Only the dead will see the end of this war.” Despite the scale of the winter attacks and ongoing diplomatic maneuvers, there is little belief among troops on the front lines that peace is imminent.
