US-Israel Attacks Kill Over 200 in Iran, Trigger Regional Conflict

US-Israel Attacks Kill Over 200 in Iran, Trigger Regional Conflict

Escalating Conflict Claims Hundreds of Lives

Coordinated military operations by the United States and Israel have resulted in the deaths of at least 201 Iranians, including the country’s top military leadership, according to Iranian state media. The attacks, which began on Sunday, March 1, 2026, mark a severe escalation in long-standing tensions. Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri and Defense Minister Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani were reported killed. Former US President Donald Trump claimed in an interview with Fox News that 48 Iranian leaders had been “assassinated” in the operation.

Israeli Military Claims Assassination of Supreme Leader

In a defining moment of the conflict, the Israeli military stated it had assassinated Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani, an Israeli military spokesperson, announced that strikes were continuing to establish air dominance over Tehran and dismantle air defense systems. “We have the capabilities and the targets to keep going on for as long as necessary,” Shoshani said, indicating that military-industrial sites remained on the target list. An Iranian official stated that the process to transition to a new leadership would begin immediately.

Iran Retaliates with Cross-Border Missile Strikes

Iran launched retaliatory attacks across the region. Saudi Arabia’s air defenses intercepted missiles targeting Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport and the Prince Sultan Airbase, which hosts US troops. In Israel, rescue teams were deployed to the city of Bet Shemesh following an Iranian strike. The Pentagon denied an Iranian claim of hitting the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Gulf, with US Central Command stating the missiles “didn’t even come close.”

Human and Economic Toll Mounts Rapidly

The conflict has resulted in significant casualties on all sides:

  • The US Central Command confirmed three American service members were killed and five seriously wounded in “Operation Epic Fury.”
  • An attack on a border regiment headquarters in western Iran killed 43 security personnel, blamed by local media on US and Israeli agents.
  • Shipping in the Persian Gulf was disrupted, with at least three tankers damaged. Security analysts warned all vessels in the region faced heightened risk.

Global Warnings Over Strait of Hormuz Closure

The crisis threatens global energy supplies. Russia’s foreign ministry warned that any closure of the Strait of Hormuz—a critical chokepoint for oil shipments—could cause “significant disbalances” in world oil and gas markets. The statement also expressed “deep regret” over the reported assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei and other officials.

Diplomatic Calls for Restraint

Amid the violence, efforts emerged. A report indicated that during a phone call with the King of Bahrain, an unnamed Prime Minister emphasized the need for restraint and respect for international law. The conflict, however, continues to escalate with no immediate de-escalation in sight.
