In a landmark evening at the 97th Academy Awards, Sean Baker’s independent tragicomedy “Anora” emerged victorious, securing five prestigious Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Mickey Madison. Held on the night of March 2nd into the morning of March 3rd in Hollywood, this year’s ceremony recognized the remarkable achievements of films and artists who have captivated audiences worldwide.
“Anora,” a film that defies the conventions of a traditional fairy tale, was produced on a modest budget of $6 million. It tells the story of a New York striptease artist who falls for the son of a Russian oligarch, only to face the disdain of his affluent family. The film also won awards for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing, underscoring its critical acclaim and popularity.
Meanwhile, “The Brutalist,” another standout from the independent film scene, received accolades for Best Cinematography and Best Original Score. Adrien Brody’s performance in the film earned him the award for Best Actor, joining the ranks of legendary actors like Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson as a two-time Oscar winner. Brody, who first won the award 22 years ago for his role in “The Pianist,” was recognized for his portrayal of a Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor in this epic tale of American integration.
The ceremony also brought recognition for other notable films. Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” despite being nominated in thirteen categories, managed to secure only two awards: Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña and Best Original Song for “El Mal.” The film, however, missed out on the Best Foreign Film award, which went to Brazilian director Walter Salles’ drama “Je suis toujours là.”
The Best Animated Feature Film award was claimed by the Latvian film “Flow,” co-produced in France, which follows the poignant journey of a cat grappling with the rising waters threatening its world. Kieran Culkin was honored with the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in “A Real Pain,” a touching narrative about family and friendship set against the backdrop of Holocaust remembrance.
Additionally, “The Substance,” directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, won the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, recognized for transforming Demi Moore into a character obsessed with a destructive youth serum.
The 2025 Oscars celebrated the diverse talents and storytelling prowess of filmmakers and actors, highlighting both established and emerging voices in the film industry. As the curtains closed on this year’s ceremony, the achievements of “Anora” and other celebrated films stood as a testament to the power of cinema to inspire and entertain audiences across the globe.
