In Punjab, massive flooding continues to cause devastation as rivers Ravi at Balloki and Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala remain at ‘exceptionally high’ levels. The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has reported 33 fatalities.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the evacuation of around 600,000 people and 450,000 animals to prevent further casualties. The government has been forced to initiate controlled breaches of critical flood barriers to protect densely populated areas.
As the floodwaters move downstream, officials warn that neighboring Sindh could experience significant impacts as early as September 2nd to 3rd. Sindh’s Information Minister, Sharjeel Inam, urged residents to prepare for potential flooding.
In response to the crisis, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, several federal ministers, and the army chief have visited the flood-affected regions to oversee relief efforts and support those displaced by the disaster.
