A 16-year-old suspect has been arrested following a shooting that killed two police officers and injured two others at a station near the Turkish coastal city of Izmir. The attack took place on Monday in the Balcova district, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, who described the incident as “heinous.”
Minister Yerlikaya confirmed that one officer was seriously injured in the assault. The suspect, identified only as E.B., was taken into custody shortly after the incident, though the motive remains unclear.
Video footage published by local media appears to show an individual wearing a balaclava and carrying a rifle entering a building. Additional clips broadcast on Turkish television showed civilians assisting police in detaining the alleged attacker.
News outlets reported the weapon used was a long-barreled firearm, possibly a pump-action shotgun. Security forces quickly sealed off the area following the attack.
Izmir’s mayor, Cemil Tugay, condemned what he called a “treacherous” assault and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers. An investigation into the shooting is underway.
