In a heartbreaking incident in Detroit, two children aged nine and two years old were found dead in a van due to the extreme cold, despite their mother being present. The incident unfolded on Monday morning as the city’s temperature plummeted to negative 11 degrees Celsius, feeling like negative 14 degrees. According to local police, the children’s mother discovered them unresponsive around midday.
Captain Nathan Duda of the Detroit Police revealed that the children were immediately rushed to the hospital upon being found, where they were pronounced dead. The mother had parked her van at a hotel and casino parking lot around 1 a.m. before running out of petrol.
Police reports indicate that the mother initially noticed one child was not breathing, prompting her to call a relative to take the child to the hospital. Later, she realized the second child was also unresponsive, leading her to call the same relative again. Duda further stated that preliminary investigations suggest the children died from the severity of the cold. The three other children who were in the van are reported to be in stable condition and have been placed in protective services.
Authorities are treating the incident as a criminal investigation and are trying to determine if anyone entered or left the van for the hotel or casino during the ordeal. Captain Duda has directed homeless individuals to seek shelter in shelters or other emergency centers and advised anyone in need of cold weather assistance to call 911. This incident sheds light on homelessness and the dangers of extreme cold within the city, prompting further reflection and concern.
