Trump, Rubio Offer Conflicting Reasons for US Entry into Iran War

Trump, Rubio Offer Conflicting Reasons for US Entry into Iran War

Conflicting Accounts Emerge

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is embroiled in a deepening crisis of credibility as President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio provided starkly contradictory explanations for the United States’ entry into a military conflict with Iran, forcing the White House into a defensive posture and drawing fire from conservative allies.

On Tuesday, President Trump asserted he ordered U.S. forces to join Israel’s attack because he believed Iran was on the verge of striking first. “I felt strongly about that,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “If we didn’t do it, they were going to attack first.” This statement directly contradicted the rationale offered by his top diplomat just a day earlier.

Rubio’s Preemptive Strike Rationale

Secretary Rubio had told reporters on Monday that the U.S. launched the attack due to fears of imminent Iranian retaliation against American forces following planned Israeli action. “We knew that if we didn’t preemptively go after them before they launched those attacks, we would suffer higher casualties,” Rubio said.

This discrepancy has fueled accusations from critics, including some within Trump’s political base, that the administration launched a “war of choice” and is being unduly influenced by Israel. Iran has consistently labeled the U.S. assault as unprovoked.

Conservative Backlash and Political Fallout

The conflicting narratives have triggered a significant backlash from prominent conservative commentators. Podcaster Matt Walsh, addressing his 4 million followers, criticized Rubio’s explanation as “the worst possible thing he could have said,” suggesting it revealed Israel was “forcing our hand.”

Megyn Kelly, another influential conservative voice, expressed doubts, stating, “This feels very much to me like it is clearly Israel’s war.” This internal criticism arrives as Republicans battle to maintain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections, complicating the political landscape for the administration.

White House Damage Control

In response to the escalating controversy, the White House has engaged in intense damage control. Trump made his first public remarks to reporters since the conflict began three days prior, though he presented no evidence to support his claim of an imminent Iranian attack.

When pressed on Capitol Hill, Secretary Rubio attempted to reconcile the accounts, stating, “The bottom line is this: The president determined we were not going to get hit first. It’s that simple.”

Behind the Scenes: The Geneva Talks

Two senior administration officials, briefing reporters on Tuesday, detailed the diplomatic breakdown that preceded military action. They described negotiations in Geneva between U.S. envoys—Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner—and Iranian officials, mediated by Oman.

The officials claimed the U.S. side repeatedly pressed Iran to abandon uranium enrichment. Instead, Iran presented a plan to enrich uranium at higher levels at the Tehran Research Reactor. The U.S. envoys interpreted this as a delay tactic and reported to Trump that while a nuclear deal similar to the 2015 Obama-era agreement might be possible, it would require months of further negotiation.

President Trump ordered military action the following day. Iran denies seeking a nuclear weapon.

The administration now faces the dual challenge of managing a military conflict and a burgeoning political crisis over its justification, with unity fraying both publicly and within its own ranks.
