PARACHINAR — Pakistan’s security forces foiled an attempted infiltration by Fitna al-Khawarij militants from Afghanistan into the Kurram sector and returned fire after Afghan Taliban forces opened unprovoked fire on Pakistani border posts, according to security sources.
Infiltration Bid Launched From Afghan Soil
The sources said the infiltration attempt was mounted from Afghan Taliban positions in Nangarhar and Paktia provinces. Pakistani troops deployed along the border successfully thwarted the move and prevented the militants from crossing into Pakistani territory.
Heavy Weapons Fire on Pakistani Posts
Following the failure of the infiltration attempt, Afghan Taliban forces opened fire on Pakistani border posts in the Kurram sector using heavy weapons, mortars and other arms, the sources said.
Pakistan’s security forces responded with small and heavy weapons, including artillery, targeting several Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive positions.
Afghan Personnel Abandon Posts
According to the security sources, the Pakistani response effectively silenced the positions from which the firing was being carried out. Several Afghan Taliban personnel subsequently abandoned their posts and fled following the intense retaliatory action.
The sources said Pakistani forces maintained complete control over the border areas and remained on high alert to respond to any further attempt at infiltration or aggression.
Tensions Along the Border
The latest incident comes amid heightened tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border following a series of security operations against terrorist groups operating in the region.
