Prince Rahim Aga Khan V, the spiritual leader of the global Ismaili community, arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday, receiving a formal red-carpet welcome from Pakistan’s highest leadership. President Asif Ali Zardari personally greeted the dignitary at Nur Khan Airbase, signaling the high importance of the visit.
First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari joined the president for the arrival ceremony. In a traditional display of hospitality, children dressed in vibrant cultural attire presented floral bouquets to the Aga Khan upon his arrival. Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and other senior officials were also in attendance.
Ceremonial Honours at the President’s House
Following the airport reception, the official ceremonies continued at the President’s House. Prince Rahim was presented with a guard of honour and stood alongside President Zardari as the national anthem was played, underscoring his status as a state guest during his stay.
The visit marks a significant moment for the Ismaili community in Pakistan, with the Aga Khan expected to embark on an extensive tour of the Gilgit-Baltistan region from May 21 to 25.
Preparations for Gilgit-Baltistan Tour
Authorities have made elaborate arrangements for the upcoming regional tour, where Prince Rahim will attend public gatherings and address various ceremonies. Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Amir Muqam, received a detailed briefing during a high-level meeting in Gilgit last Friday.
Officials anticipate massive public gatherings at key locations, including:
- Passu in Hunza
- Gilgit City
- Gahkuch Bala
- Taus Yasin
With thousands of participants expected, the local administration is considering holding multiple sessions at certain venues to manage the crowds effectively. Directives have been issued to ensure an uninterrupted power supply in Upper Hunza and adjoining areas. Furthermore, plans are underway to arrange extra transport facilities and provide special relaxation in travel timings to facilitate the movement of visitors during the visit.
